In light of China's rapid transition into an aging society, understanding and enhancing the life satisfaction of the elderly has become a focus in academic and policy circles. Leveraging data from the 2020 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), this research delves into the economic and non-economic determinants influencing elderly life satisfaction. The empirical findings underscore the pivotal roles played by intergenerational support, social health insurance, self-rated health status, incidence of falls, pension, and marital status. However, distinctions emerge between rural and urban elders regarding the perceived significance of marital status, social activities, and health-related factors on their satisfaction levels. Notably, urban elders place greater importance on health-related indicators such as social health insurance, self-rated health status, and fall records. Therefore, to enhance the life satisfaction of the elderly in China, key policy considerations should include promoting healthy aging initiatives, improving the allocation of medical resources with tailored approaches for urban and rural areas, supporting intergenerational financial dynamics, and alleviating elderly poverty while expanding medical insurance coverage nationwide.
