Abstract

The Padma Bridge, inaugurated in June 2022, represents a transformative infrastructure project in Bangladesh, significantly enhancing connectivity and socio-economic development in the country’s underserved southwestern region. This study evaluates the bridge’s multi-dimensional impacts on Barisal Division residents through a mixed-methods approach combining surveys and interviews. Findings reveal substantial economic benefits, including increased employment opportunities and business growth, alongside improved access to healthcare and education services. The bridge has also strengthened regional integration and trade networks. However, challenges persist in equitable benefit distribution, service quality, and environmental sustainability, particularly regarding fisheries and water quality. The study recommends targeted economic policies, sustained social infrastructure investment, inclusive regional strategies, and environmental protection measures to maximize the bridge’s long-term benefits while addressing existing disparities. These findings highlight the Padma Bridge’s role as a catalyst for regional development while underscoring the need for balanced, sustainable approaches to ensure inclusive progress.
