In today’s globalized world, bilingual dictionaries, as crucial tools for language learning and communication, also play a key role in shaping national images. Taking the Commercial Press’s 1985 edition of The Italian-Chinese Dictionary as an example, this paper explores the feasibility and advantages of using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach to study the role of bilingual dictionaries in shaping national image. CDA integrates the relationship between language, power, and ideology, emphasizing a comprehensive examination of text, discourse practice, and social practice across three levels. This approach can more fully reveal the process of national image construction and the socio-political dynamics behind it. By applying this method, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of how bilingual dictionaries shape national images within different cultural and social contexts, providing new perspectives and methodological tools for research on national image construction in international communication.
