Abstract

Pragmatics, as one of the branches of modern mathematical logic semiotics, is a discipline about the relationship between symbols or linguistic symbols (expressions such as words, sentences, etc.) and their interpreters. It studies specific discourse in specific contexts and how language can be understood and used through context, which plays a crucial role in second language acquisition. Pragmatic analysis studies the standards and rules that influence language behavior (such as greeting, answering, socializing, and persuasion) and govern alternating speech. This paper focuses on the significant role that pragmatics plays in second language acquisition. It begins with an introduction to the key concepts of pragmatics and second language acquisition, followed by an in-depth exploration of how pragmatic knowledge and awareness enhance learners' communicative competence. The study also examines the challenges and strategies in teaching pragmatics in the context of second language learning. Through a comprehensive analysis, it is concluded that integrating pragmatics into second language instruction is essential for developing learners' overall language proficiency and their ability to use the language effectively in real-life communication.
