Abstract

Through his artistic career, Paul Klee never wavered in his commitment to examining the fundamental nature of art. He believes that the core of painting should be expressed through formal language, with an underlying fundamental relationship between form and content. Klee initiated his exploration of art’s enigma by employing the most elemental techniques of painting. Utilizing his personal reflections on the cosmos, space, and time, he applied visual language to develop a series of color and image systems rich in referential meaning, thus establishing his own cognitive framework for understanding the world. These visual artifacts frequently display ambiguity and uncertainty, increasing interpretation challenges while simultaneously directing the spectator into a meditative domain beyond superficial appearance. Analyzing the ‘secret of color’ provides further insight into Klee’s profound observations on the interplay between form and content. This continual investigation of the ineffable domain of mystery infused his entire creative existence.
