Agriculture is central to the livelihoods of communities in the Ari, Konso, South Omo, and Basketo zones of Southern Ethiopia. However, agronomic research in these areas remains fragmented. This review synthesizes existing studies to identify key findings, research gaps, and future priorities. Using a narrative review approach, we analyzed journal articles, theses, and institutional reports published between 2000 and 2025. The results show that most research has focused on improved crop varieties, soil fertility management, and moisture conservation. Maize, sorghum, common bean, and root crops have received the most attention, with yield improvements reported under optimal management. Nevertheless, research is unevenly distributed: Ari and South Omo are relatively well-studied, while Konso and especially Basketo are severely under-researched. Key gaps include a lack of site-specific fertilizer recommendations, weak integration of indigenous knowledge, limited climate-resilient interventions, and poor pest management strategies. We conclude that future agronomic research must be location-specific, participatory, and inclusive of farmers’ knowledge. Strengthening collaboration among researchers, extension services, and local communities is essential for improving productivity and sustainability in Southern Ethiopia.
