The Impacts of Climate Change on Food Safety and Food Security

Dear Colleagues,

Climate change poses a profound threat to global food systems, with direct and indirect consequences for both food safety and food security. As global temperatures rise, weather patterns become increasingly erratic, leading to more frequent droughts, floods, and extreme weather events that disrupt agricultural productivity. This, in turn, affects the availability, accessibility, and stability of food supplies, especially in vulnerable regions.

At the same time, climate change also alters the environmental conditions that affect food safety—influencing the prevalence of foodborne pathogens, increasing the risk of mycotoxin contamination, pesticide residues, and the spread of pests and zoonotic diseases. The combined effects can reduce the nutritional quality of food and increase the health risks associated with its consumption.

Scope and Significance:

• Food security is threatened by reduced crop yields, livestock losses, and disruptions in food supply chains.
• Food safety is compromised by rising temperatures that favor microbial growth, changes in water quality, and greater use of agrochemicals under stress conditions.
• These impacts disproportionately affect low-income populations and developing countries, exacerbating global inequality and public health challenges.

Key Research Areas:

• Impact assessment of climate variability on crop and livestock systems
• Foodborne disease risks under changing climatic conditions
• Adaptation strategies for resilient food production and safety systems
• Climate-smart agriculture and sustainable food system innovations
• Policy frameworks and international cooperation for mitigation and adaptation

Types of Articles to be Included:

• Original Research Articles
• Review Papers
• Short Communications
• Case Studies and Field Trial Reports
• Meta-analyses and Modeling Studies

Understanding the interconnectedness between climate change, food safety, and food security is essential for developing sustainable, resilient, and inclusive food systems in the face of ongoing global climate challenges.

Authors should submit their manuscripts for the special issue by emailing them as an attachment to specialissue@hillpublish.com or by using the online submission system. The manuscript should be submitted by one of the authors, and submissions by anyone other than the authors will not be accepted. Additionally, the submitted manuscript should include a cover letter that specifies the special issue to which the manuscript is being submitted.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). The submitted papers should be properly formatted and written in fluent English. All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Guidelines page.
